garden tribute

I was getting a shovel to harvest the carrots. You see, we were cleaning out the upper garden and getting it ready for a fall garden and harvest. I came back up the hill, shovel in hand. I noticed then that Caleb was there with Rusty. I didn't notice until I was all the way up there that Caleb had brought Rusty the phone. I looked at Rusty feeling the color fade from my face. Rusty nodded at me, and I knew then, you were gone.

We stood there in the garden for awhile, not knowing what to do. But we said a few words about you. Then, we went back to work. Tears and sweat are both salty. We continued harvesting cabbage heads, and baby organic carrots, along with the last of the romaine and a bushel of green beans. I kept tasting the food. Dirt and all. I felt like everything tasted a little sweeter, as I remembered you, there. I looked back at the house, and smiled as the sun slowly set over it, Gratitude filled my aching heart, .

I would not be working this land, had it not been for you. You believed in the dream. So look Boompa... look at my harvest today, look what grew.

"Make no little plans, they have no magic to stir men's blood and will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble and logical plan never dies, but long after we are gone will be a living thing." Lita Bane
